Over time the sand in a filter begins to become smoothed and the sand bed begins to compact.  This will prevent your filter from catching the smaller particles it did when new and will cause the pressure to build in the filter more quickly.

Manufacturers recommend changing the sand in your filter every three to five years.  Keeping your sand new will help keep your pool crystal clear and prevent you from needing to backwash more often.
